Four Unexpected Lessons About Learning To Dive

Diving isn’t just about plunging into the deep—it’s about surfacing with new perspectives. Here are four unexpected lessons about learning to dive—each one deeper than the last.

  • How calm I had to be.
  • How obsessed I became.
  • What I was scared of.
  • How social it was.

Unexpected Lessons About Learning to Dive

How Calm You Had to Be

Scuba diving is considered a type of sport, so you may be surprised when the instructor reminds you several times to slow/calm down. You may find swimming in a slow and relaxed manner challenging, especially if you are excited about everything.

How Obsessed You Become

After your first day of diving, you will feel obsessed, and you may spend every minute for the rest of your trip talking about the tests, your instructor, the marine life you saw below and how many weights you used in your belt.

What You are Scared of

Actually, you should never be afraid of the water. And if you do feel that, heading under the sea won’t be a good idea. Some beginner scuba divers may feel afraid of sharks, while others think it is a lucky moment to see a shark!

For me, I was terrified when seeing a Lion Fish swimming across the reef below, and even now, my heartbeat still echoes in my ears.

Encountering poisonous fish has been the most thrilling and frightening part of my short diving life. Who could have known?

How Social It Will Be

When completing your Open Water dives on a dive boat with your instructors and other dive groups, you may feel so nervous, and think you would have to latch on to my poor instructor for the day, and there is no one else to talk to.

Fortunately, you are wrong. You may never meet such social people in your life! After your first diving trip, everyone will come back and think it was like you had known each other for 20 years. Every scuba diver had something to share from their dive, memories from previous dives and other stories from getting certified.
