Because GPS Can’t Help You Below the Surface: PADI Underwater Navigator

Your phone can guide you through busy streets, unfamiliar cities, and road trips—but once you descend below the surface, GPS is useless. Underwater, poor visibility, open sand, or thick kelp can quickly make even confident divers lose their sense of direction.

That’s where the PADI Underwater Navigator course comes in. By teaching you how to read natural clues and use a compass with confidence, this course replaces guesswork with skill—so you always know where you are, where you’re going, and how to get back safely.

GPS Can’t Help You Below the Surface

Dive computers featuring GPS only record your entry point. They can’t guide you back to the boat or shore unless you surface, which isn’t always safe. When you learn how to navigate underwater, this enables you to be relax and enjoy longer with longer bottom time, in addition to saving air and avoiding long surface swims.

A Digital Compass Won’t Navigate for You

Digital compasses usually come with dive computer consoles. Just keep in mind that both digital compasses and analog ones functions by the same way.

The digital compass isn’t very useful in case of not knowing how to set a heading and estimate distance. Also consider that a digital compass needs regular recalibration.

To be honest, many scuba divers put off taking the underwater navigation course for a long time. They just follow the guide or buddy up with a more experienced scuba diver. But once deciding to become a Divemaster, they must ingrain their skills.

During the PADI Divemaster course, you should attend a navigation workshop, but no one wants to be the most clueless candidate in their group.

Actually, once you start the class, you will say, “Why didn’t I do this sooner?” The training materials are easy to understand, and the instructor give you sufficient time to practice compass use topside before going underwater. It is also a good idea to be around other divers who  were not good in using a compass.
