Five Dives, New Depths: Inside the Advanced Open Water Course

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is all about learning by doing. Through five focused adventure dives, you’ll build real-world skills, gain confidence underwater, and experience new types of diving—all under the supervision of an instructor.

Each dive adds something different, helping you become a more capable, comfortable, and adventurous diver.

In addition to enhancing your dive education, you will have great fun too. With this course, you will build your confidence and expand your scuba skills through 5 different Adventure Dives.

After you enroll in the course, you have to complete:

Then, each scuba diver should choose three additional Adventure Dives from the available options, including search and recovery, fish ID, wreck diving, night diving, self-sufficient diving, etc… Asking advice from your instructor is recommended before choosing from these dives, so you can see which courses are available in your area and what most interests you.

The Advanced Open Water Diver course is an excellent opportunity to try some of the different things divers can do and see what really interests you in scuba diving. For instance, it is your chance to try out exotic new equipment, like diver propulsion vehicle (DPV), a full-face mask or even introduce yourself to tec diving if Sidemount and Rebreather Adventure Dives are available.

Once you discover what specifically interest you in scuba diving, you’ll be happy to know that each Adventure Dive can count as the first dive of the matching PADI Specialty course and vice versa.

And depending on your location and the chosen dive shop, you may start with ice diving, cavern diving, enriched air or any type of the other available dive specialties  either right away or within 12 months after getting your Advanced Open Water Diver certification.

Scuba divers who get the most out of diving never stop learning, and this is the key first step in continuing education.
