Risks Every Diver Should Know about Buoyancy

It’s not surprising that the most common injuries among divers, such as barotrauma, uncontrolled ascents, marine life injuries are related to buoyancy issues— and you can prevent all of this with some practice and attention to detail.
- Inefficiency in buoyancy control can lead to descending deeper than you have planned. This, in turn, can alter the intended dive profile and potentially increase your air consumption. Constant changes to your buoyancy control device can have impacts on your air consumption.
- The worst case scenario is to conduct uncontrolled ascending, which increases your risk to suffer from a lung overexpansion injury (pulmonary barotrauma) and substantially increases the risk to get an arterial gas embolism.
- Ear injuries are also considered a common injury that is associated with ineffective buoyancy control. While descending, when feeling uncomfortable pressure in your middle ears or sinuses, it is preferred to stop descending, ascend till resolving the pressure, attempt to equalize and, if you succeed, continue to descend. When experiencing a reverse block while ascending, you should descend a little and attempt to equalize. You can have difficulty executing these procedures without proper buoyancy control.

- And remember, you should change buoyancy during the dive. On descent, your wetsuit compresses and as a result, your buoyancy decreases. During the dive, as the gas in the tank is depleted, you becomd more buoyant. On ascent, the air in your wetsuit and BCD expands, which in turn increases your buoyancy.
