Learning how to SCUBA dive is considered a fun experience but it can be a challenge for some people. Because of that you shouldn’t only look for good courses that the dive centers offer but also for the instructors that the dive centers employ.Â
For example having a great scuba instructor for your open water diver course will make a great difference between an activity you will do while on a trip and a lifeLong hobby.
In this article we will tell you what makes a great scuba instructor?Â
What makes a great scuba instructor?
There is six things that any centers will look for when they are hiring new instructors, including the following:
- Having excellent situation awareness.
- Talking a lot.
- Passionate about what they do.
- Abiding by the etiquette of proper dive.
- Having patience like a mother.
- Making the training fun and enjoyable.
Having Excellent Situation Awareness

The key in maintaining Safety is to know what is going on around all the group members all the time. A great scuba instructor must be attentive too many things such as:
- He should be always aware of the place of each student.
- He should know the place of the Diving group on the Dive site specifically.
- It’s better for him to know the number of groups that are around them.
- He must know about the hazards that may face them in the area they are diving in.
- He must take into consideration the amount of air that is left in each student’s tank.
A great Scuba instructor has to put all this information into his considerations for most of the time while he is swimming, navigating backwards and making sure that every member in his group having the best day ever.
Talking a lot
A great scuba instructor is the one who talks a lot. He will guide you through the academic sessions with passion while explaining concepts that are related to diving in detail. A good scubar instructor will always encourage you to ask as many questions as you can and will be passionate to answer them all.Â
It’s a crucial thing for the instructor to be clear and understandable while covering all the important topics about dive briefings. If you choose the right instructor he will talk you through almost all the aspects of scuba Diving and will ensure to leave you with a new passion for this activity and appreciation of the world beneath the sea.

Passionate about What They Do
A great scuba instructor shouldn’t only think of his profession as a way of earning money but he also must have a passion for the underwater world. You will touch this passion in the courses when you see him keen interest in conversation efforts.
He is responsible for teaching the students about marine life and showing them how this life is affected by the humans’ actions. A good instructor will take his students on cleaning trips on beaches and also will point out any trash found during a dive in order to help remove it together.
If you want to ensure that you have a good instructor, make sure that you are choosing an instructor who has a history of joining initiatives to save the environment and animals of marine life.
Abiding by the Etiquette of Proper Dive

The world beneath the waves is full of incredible marine species and many scuba instructors and Divemasters enjoy seeing you come face to face with these animals for the first time. But you must be aware of any instructor or dive master that can break any proper dive etiquette just to show you a unique thing.
For example, a dive professional who annoys a pufferfish to make it inflate to show you the creature’s defense mechanisms, is a lousy one. It’s forbidden to stand on corals, harass marine life or touch anything in any way. Exclude any divemaster or scuba instructor who treats the underwater world as though it was his own home.
Having Patience Like a Mother
Patience is a virtue. This sentence couldn’t be more true when it comes to talking about what makes a great scuba instructor. Teaching the same scuba diving skills to different groups day after day will become tiring and monotonous for some people after a while.Â
But a great scuba instructor who loves meeting new people and teaching them how to dive, won’t mind teaching the same thing over and over again. The fact that they are able to show their diving knowledge and skills with other people from all over the world makes them find fulfillment.Â
