Underwater Survival Guide: How to Recover Your Regulator

Regulatory recovery is considered a common skill that people learn when they sign up for both the Open Water Diver course and the Discover Scuba Diving course. As a scuba diver, it’s crucial to know how to recover your regulator if it falls off from your mouth. 

Although this may sound difficult, you will find it one of the easiest skills to master after learning it. This is regarded from the first skills that you will learn during the pool training session when your scuba instructor goes through each step with you.

How to properly recover your regulator underwater is an important skill for any scuba driver to master. In case of dislodging or knocking your regulator of your mouth while diving, knowing how to efficiently recover it can mean the difference between a controlled and safe ascent and dangerous situation. 

In this guide, we will tell you in detail how to recover your regulator underwater. By following the next steps and practicing them in a controlled environment in addition to being well prepared for any emergencies while scuba diving, you can make sure that you are equipped to handle any challenges that may arise beneath the waves. 

Don’t forget that safety comes first and being confident in the ability you have to recover your regulator underwater is an essential part to be a skilled and responsible scuba diver.

Step 1 

Take a deep inhalation from your regulator, then remove it from your mouth. Don’t panic, as you have inhaled sufficient air that you need to recover the regulator again.

step 2 

Don’t forget that you mustn’t hold your breath underwater in any circumstances, so ensure to breathe out small bubbles into the water after the regulator is out of your mouth. 

It’s also important to breathe out in a slow and calm manner to make sure that you will not suffer from running out of air before you recover your regulator.

step 3 

Once the regulator is out of your mouth,  toss it behind your shoulder, then lean to your right side in order to touch your thigh.

step 4

Move your hand to the backside until you touch your tank, then move it upwards and bring forward in a rotatory manner. You will find the regulatory on your arm.
