A persistent dive mask leak is considered one of the most inconvenient things that you can suffer from during a scuba dive but fortunately, there are some solutions.

Having a leaking dive mask isn’t a critical thing or even dangerous, but you have to stop and empty your mask regularly and this makes your dive annoying.

Actually, a leaking dive mask means you have a faulty or ill-fitting unit and replacing the mask with a new well-fitting model can be your only solution.

To prevent your dive mask from leaking when scuba diving, try the next 5 ways:

• Check for a proper fit. 
• Look out for hair and the hoods.
• Relax your grip.
• Shave to improve your mask fit.
• Try to wait until tomorrow.

Check for a Proper Fit 

The first step to prevent your dive mask from leaking is to make sure that the mask correctly fits your face. Do this by placing the dive mask on your face without attaching the strap of the mask.

Just leave the mask strap hanging beneath the mask, then gently inhale while you are holding the mask against your face and allow it to follow away while inhaling.

If you find that the mask falls off your face, then this mask is too small. If it stays on while inhaling, then this is the perfect mask for you. If there are any leaks, then it isn’t the fit.

Remember that your problem will be fixable as long as the skirt of your mask is intact all the way around, there are no holes found anywhere and the glass doesn’t have any gaps or holes.

Look out for Hair and Hoods 

Remember that any thinner object that can be trapped beneath the mask skirt will allow water to enter the dive mask. 

The problem may be in the hoods too, if you are wearing one, or even strands of hair, as few strands can be like a wick that allows water to enter in a continuous manner.

Before diving, ensure that the skirt of your mask isn’t folded on itself in any way and there is nothing trapped beneath it.

Relax Your Grip 

When you try to repair a leaking dive mask, it’s a mistake to tighten it even more; this can also exacerbate the problem. 

When you tighten your mask to your face too much, the mask skirt will warp and leak water. Tightening it further will make the problem persist or even make it worsen, so it’s a good idea to loosen it.

When you wear a mask, you should wear the strap so loosely that it becomes ornamental once you are underwater and the water pressure will hold the mask in place. 

It is a fact that the strap keeps the mask on your face above water, but below the water, this is mostly done by the water , so it is a good idea to take a few notches off the Mask.

Shave to Improve Your Mask Fit 

The hair in your face can cause the same issues as the hair on your head, as it can become trapped beneath the skirt of the Mask.

So, try to prevent your dive mask from leaking by shaving. If you have a bite of scruff or a full beard, try at least to shave the upper lip. You may never know, this amish look could sit a trend!!

You can go 2 days without shaving, but you will notice that on the third day, your mask will start leaking which will force you to use the razor. If you don’t like to shave your mustache, try to put some Vaseline on as it sometimes helps.

Actually, this vaseline trick has successfully worked for women as well and some women used to rub vaseline all around the skirt of their mask as that helps also to out minor skin imperfections. It’s worth a try anyway.

Try to Wait Until Tomorrow 

Sometimes there is nothing you can do to prevent your dive mask from leaking, as whatever you do it continues to leak. Even my trusty “Scubapro Frameless” which almost fits my face as if it was molded from it, sometimes leaks for no reason.

Maybe some days my face appears to be bent out of shape because of sleeping on the other side that night or due to the temperature of the mask. 

Some days, it simply leaks, accept that and think positively for example, use it as a chance to practice your clearing drills of the mask and then wait until tomorrow. If the mask fit perfectly when you buy it, then it will fit perfectly again tomorrow.
