Can you scuba diving if you can’t swim?

Do you need to know how to swim scuba diving?

 

As we mentioned before, scuba diving is one of the non swimmer water sports, as The fins assist divers in moving through the water, and their BCD (jacket) keeps them neutrally buoyant while underwater, allowing the diver to float at the surface. So, while the obvious  answer is yes, non swimmers can scuba dive, there are several issues to be addressed, and the practical, real-world answer is that they should not attempt the course.

 

  •  to be more accurate about it also depends on which level or programs you are going to enter and the professionalism of your instructor.
  • If you are planning to try entry-level diving programs, such as PADI’s Discover Dive Program, do not require participants to pass a swim test. This type of program offers divers the opportunity to try diving in a swimming pool or in shallow open waters in small groups.

 

  • It requires minimal skill practice and participants rely on the coach for help in the event that a problem is not possible. Very small groups, well-designed courses, and highly trained instructors minimise the risks involved and are generally an excellent and safe way to try diving and find out if this is an activity one would like to pursue.

 

  • If you want to try scuba diving in open water, the situation will be different. For a scuba diver he must be comfortable on water, and non swimmers will not be able to be comfortable as their feet can’t stand on firm ground, and might endanger themselves.

  • You can’t see red or yellow once you’re below 10 metres deep!
  •  When you cut yourself, your blood appears green blue due to the difference in light radiation.
  • Sound travels five times faster underwater than it does in air, making it nearly impossible to determine where sound is coming from because we rely on the time difference between our ears.
  • Because oxygen becomes toxic under pressure, special gases with low oxygen content are used at depths greater than 42 metres.

  • Children as young as eight years old can learn to dive; the only requirement is that they be able to manage the weight of the equipment.
  • And one of the most miraculous interesting facts that happened in the  diving world, is the woman who went diving in a wheelchair, Sue Austin. Many people are driven by their passion, but for this woman diving was something bigger, it was an attempt to prove her stamina, and show the world the truth of her! Does scuba certificate programs require passing a swim test?

 

As its said dont try to walk before learn to crawl, to be able to scube dive properly, you have at least to get the basic swimming skills, nobody asks you to be michael philipes, but at least you have to go through swimming test like:

 

  • Swim 200m/yards (or 300m/yards with mask, fins, and snorkel). There is no time limit for this, and you can swim 200 meters/yards.
  • or (300 meters/yards with mask, fins, and snorkel),This has no time limit and you can use any swimming strokes you want.

 

  • The main purpose of acquiring basic swimming skills, is to make it more easy, and mor comfortable for you, in order to maintain your balance in water, and in cases of emergency.
