No matter your goal here, you sure will swim. And as a beginner in scuba diving, there are some basic swimming skills for scuba diving that you need to learn to be able to scuba dive.Â
All scuba diving organizations require her students to take a swim test first. The purpose of that test is to show the instructor and the scuba diving organization that you know the basic swimming skills for scuba diving. At least to know how to get back to the boat after the end of a dive.
Swimming Skills for Scuba Diving (Understanding the Swim Test)

Almost all the scuba diving organizations require the same swimming skills for scuba diving to give you an open water diver certification. The swim skill requirements include:
- A 10 minutes of treading or floating. You can use any type you are proficient in, but it is not possible for you to take a break or have assistance by holding on to anything.
- A non-stopping swimming for 200 yards/meters.
These two requirements don’t seem very difficult, but if you haven’t enough swimming background, the 200 yards and the 10 minute tread will be a challenge to you. There are many students that can’t pass the swim test and have to come back on another date to repeat the swim test.Â
All you need is to survive and finish the test successfully, they don’t require your swimming to be in a perfect way, but for one thinking to become a scuba diver, you will have to learn more than surviving, as your good swimming skills for scuba diving could save your life one day.
How to Be Prepared?
This swim test doesn’t require you to be the next Michael hels or Katie Ledecky to pass it. You will just need some training. Our experts from Drar Diving Center advice you to start training as soon as possible if you are planning to get a scuba certification
Even if you have no clue about what to do, going to the pool and getting too comfortable with water will be a great step. Bring your mask and try to swim a few meters, then take a break, and swim again.
You will notice that swimming becomes very easy and you can now swim double the meters you swam before without the need of a break.
You can try wearing fins while swimming as they will help you to be more physically fit. If that doesn’t help you enough, you will not be an air hog at least when you start scuba diving!
The more you have more swimming skills for scuba diving, the more you make last-longer dives and the more you enjoy diving.
Remember the water treads in your training. The training on it will be almost the same. Start slowly and then gradually increase the duration.
As a part of the swimming training, head to the deep end and start training in the water treads by trying to tread water for at least 30 seconds without stopping. Put in mind to start near the lane line or wall to be able to grab on it when you need a break.
Do that several times with some breaks in between until 30 minutes of treads become easy for you then start to increase the duration. When you do 6 to 7 minutes if treads easily, you will be ready to rock the swim test.
