One of the big reasons it is important to get fit for scuba diving is that maintaining physical fitness can protect you from Decompression Sickness (DCS). When your body content from lean mass and fat are reduced, the capacity of the body to carry oxygen is improved Leading to reducing susceptibility to Decompression Sickness.

What it Means to Be in Good Physical Condition for Diving

When it comes to getting fitness for scuba diving, it’s essential for scuba divers to have both a degree of cardiovascular fitness and strength.

When you are underwater, there is a stress on your cardiovascular system that increases as you dive deeper. If your cardiovascular system isn’t in shape, you will have a problem even with the easiest dives according to DAN “The Divers Alert Network”

The evidence for that is that nearly one-third of divers’ deaths are associated with an acute cardiac event. When you maintain good cardiovascular fitness, this can protect your body from diving injuries related to cardiovascular problems.

As a scuba diver, you need a certain amount of muscular fitness, which includes both strength and endurance. Your muscle strength is needed to carry and set up your scuba diving equipment, while endurance is needed when finning in the currents, for instance a frog-kicking diver with a good physical condition should expect their leg muscles to propel them through currents at a reasonable speed without overexertion.

The Best Ways to Maintain Good Physical Fitness for Scuba Diving

To maintain good physical fitness for scuba diving, you should maintain a balanced, physical lifestyle. As a Scuba Diver, you have to

  • Exercise regularly.
  • Eat a balanced diet (that helps you stay hydrated).
  • Cut out smoking or any other activities that may reduce your cardiovascular ability.

Exercising with dumbells

Divers should focus on the workouts that combine both muscle and cardiovascular training.  For instance, the following weight training circuit can help you. Try the following weight training circuit using either dumbbells or a barbell.

Deadlift x10

Squat x10

Bent Over Row x10

Ab Crunch x10

Shoulder Press x10

Every exercise should be done once without taking a break unless you complete them all.. after completing the exercises, take a break for 1 minute, then repeat the circuit 2-4 times.

It’s preferable to exercise regularly, four times a week, to maintain good physical fitness for scuba diving.

However, the best exercise to get fit for scuba diving is the exercise that works for you. Choose exercises that suit your own personal capabilities and your free time. If you’re someone who’s too busy to be able to have a two-hour gym session multiple times a week, there are many easy ways to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. For instance:

  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Park far away to force yourself to walk.
  • You can even do mini ab workouts at the work desk.

Your Mental Fitness is Also Important

Your state of mind or mental fitness is also essential for diving as a component of being fit. Stress, moof, sleep, and fatigue can all affect your ability to concentrate and react quickly underwater. Scuba diving requires being in a good mental state to remain aware during the whole dive. This means a scuba diver needs to be in both physical and mental fitness.

A scuba diver must know how to manage anxiety and stress while scuba diving. In the PADI Rescue Diver course, you will learn that pre-dive stress can cloud your judgment leading to many problems.

PADI Organisation offers a speciality course called PADI Psychological Diver to increase awareness of the importance of mental health on scuba diving, PADI now also offers a specialty course called PADI Psychological Diver.
