Heroes in Training: Why Children Should Learn CPR

Imagine a playground where laughter fills the air—then suddenly, a child collapses. In those critical moments before help arrives, knowing CPR can mean the difference between life and death. While we often think of adults as the ones trained to respond, children too can become lifesavers.

Someone may say “Why children should learn CPR!” Well, learning CPR at a young age doesn’t just equip kids with a skill, it also empowers them with confidence, responsibility, and the ability to protect the people they love. The Kids Save Lives movement proves that small hands can make a big impact, turning ordinary children into everyday heroes.

At What Age Can Children Learn CPR?

According to ABC News, About 86% of children (having 9-18 years) could perform CPR in a proper way after hands-on training. Some of the children don’t have the sufficient physical strength to perform CPR in an effective way on an adult, but the European Resuscitation Council still recommends that children should learn CPR.

The Council also indicates on the ease and effectiveness of educating school children in CPR. Some may find it taught to younger children, but the optimal age to start learning cardiac compressions is at least 12 years.

Even if younger children doesn’t have the sufficient physical strength to administer chest compressions, they still get benefit from learning the steps they should take in emergencies, which include:

  • Recognizing the signs and symptoms of different conditions of emergencies.
  • The proper way of activating emergency services.
  • Emergency situation Do’s and Don’ts.

Learning CPR doesn’t require minimum age, only recommendations. According to several studies, children learn and absorb information faster. Learning CPR early can help save a life later on.

Kids Can Save Lives

For instance, here are two inspiring stories of young adults who tried to make a difference by using their emergency training:

How to Choose a CPR Class

CPR is one of the physical skills that needs hands-on practice. Can anyone learn how to dribble a basketball without ever touching the ball? It is the same here, you can’t learn CPR chest compressions without practicing on a CPR mannequin.

Certainly, you should choose a CPR course including hands-on training with an instructor and adheres to ILCOR standards (International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation Standards). Avoid online-only courses in which you can’t learn the stills you’ll need to save a life.

Become a CPR and First Aid Instructor

The best way to make sure that both your child and their classmates receive the correct CPR training may be to become a CPR instructor. Depending on your experience, you can finish CPR and first aid instructor training in just a few days. After completing the course, you’ll become confident to administer and teach CPR and first aid skills to other trainee.

Every day, EFR Instructors help communities prepare for disaster by training its members on how to respond to medical emergencies when there are no available emergency services. The PADI training programs that we offer in DRAR DIVING Center are recognized worldwide and supported by over 50 years of experience in developing courses, materials, and education programs.
