Is scuba diving expensive?

A crucial question might be asked by a lot of scuba diving lovers, who are uncertain about whether to take the first step in learning diving, or planning to go for a diving journey for the first time. Like many things in life, scuba diving costs can be quite high at first, but the more you can dive in the nearest epic local diving spot to your homeland, the lower the expense will be.

  • So far if you only dive one week a year in exotic locations, the per dive cost will be much higher, so it all depends on money wise planning, selecting a suitable dive spot and going for it.

  • Another thing is that there is always a higher level than the one you are on in diving, which can be very appealing but also necessitates more training, travel, and equipment. However, if you enjoy it, it is worthwhile. There are also many people who are perfectly content doing the same intro try-dive year after year as a small part of their vacation in various parts of the world. If you are content at that level, that can be a very cost-effective way to dive.

  • So it seems that the word expensive is controversial here, when we talk about diving expenses. In order to be more practical that will lead us to the coming question about diving expenses in the beginning!

How much does it cost to get started scuba diving?

The expenses here varies based on what you are planning to start with, if you want to be a certified scuba diver, then To become a certified scuba diver, you will need to spend between $470 and $1,200, which includes your Open Water Diver course and one year of dive insurance. Be prepared to spend an additional $150 – $600 on a scuba mask, snorkel, fins, and boots, as well as a training dive.

In case if you want to be more minimalist with the diving expenses then you can follow those steps:

  • In general to minimise the expenses, renting equipment costs about one-twentieth the price of purchasing it. If you plan to travel for all of your dives, the entry-level dive kit is around $2K, give or take. This includes everything except tanks and weights. Renting would have saved you a lot of money up front, but if you did more than 20 dives, you’d end up spending more in the long run.
  • Scuba diving locally will help you to enjoy your hobby, and at the same time save more money, it will cost you about 15 dollars per dive. Make a simple search about epic diving spots, and try to indulge in the diving community in your country that will please you a lot.
  • Don’t neglect maintenance regular check, it will be a lifesaver check, and it will also reduce the huge maintenance expenses, you could do it regularly and catch up with the problem from the beginning.
