Little Fins, Big Dreams: Scuba Courses for Kids

Most certification organizations of scuba diving offer scuba courses for kids starting from 8 years old. While practicing scuba diving at this age might be suitable for some children, it may not be for others. There’s ongoing debate in the scuba diving community about whether to let kids start scuba diving or not.

Not all children interested in scuba diving are mature enough for the sport. Many instructors think it is unnecessarily risky to teach kids to scuba dive. There are no conclusive studies on the physiological effects of scuba diving on the developing body of the child.

In this article, you will find precious information about scuba courses for kids.

Minimum Age Requirement for Scuba Diving

Generally, a child will need to be 8 years old at least to start scuba diving in a pool, and 10 years old to be able to get a scuba diving certification.

Available Scuba Courses for Kids Aged 8-10

You can find various scuba courses for kids available. The shortest is the one-session “try dive,” where children learn basic safety skills, such as hand signals, ear equalization, etc … then enjoy playing in a pool with an instructor.

In-depth, multi-day courses for young kids are available. In these courses, kids will learn scuba diving skills and theory in smaller, simpler increments across short classes.

For instance, one hour-long class might focus on mask clearing, while another session is dedicated to use the buoyancy compensator. Students practice scuba skills in shallow water, which is only 12 feet (4 meters) deep, in a controlled environment like a swimming pool.

Available Scuba Courses for Kids Aged 10-11

Children who are 10 and 11 can join several courses that are designed for children or even get a scuba diving certification.

Most scuba organizations offer open water certification from 10 years old. Children in these courses must read the same materials and take the same exams as adults. A child’s success in a certification course depends on their reading level in addition to other factors.

A child who completes the open water course earns a “junior” certification. This involves the same coursework as an adult certification, but has certain restrictions.

For children who are 10 and 11, restrictions include diving only with a certified adult or dive professional and not diving below 40 feet deep. A junior certification can be upgraded to an adult certification when the child reaches 15 years old without additional training.

Available Scuba Courses for Kids Aged 12 to 14

Children who are 12 to 14 years old can enroll in various junior scuba diving certification courses. Most scuba agencies offer junior versions of adult courses, such as open water, advanced certifications, specialty courses, and rescue diver certifications. However, children in this age group cannot lead dives or assist instructors..

Junior certifications for children who are 12-14 come with depth and supervision limits, but they’re less strict than for younger children. Most training organizations set a maximum depth of 60 feet for junior open water certified divers in this age group.

Some organizations permit junior advanced open water divers to go down to 72 feet. Kids aged 12-14 must always dive with a certified diver or dive professional. Junior certifications can usually be upgraded to adult certifications at age 15 without additional training..
