Essentially, it is a brief program in which you revisit dive theory and practice your diving skills. Although it typically lasts only a morning or afternoon, it is highly recommended (and sometimes required) if you haven’t dived for a while. There are other rules that are applied for professional scuba divers with Dive Master, Instructor, or higher certifications.

What are the Validity of Divemaster and Instructor Certifications?

Unfortunately, Professional Scuba Certifications like DiveMaster or Scuba Instructor can expire when the scuba diver hasn’t been practicing his career for a long period. Certain agencies, such as CMAS, have a fixed expiration date for these certifications (5 years), while others, such as PADI, evaluate each case individually.

Ensure your First Aid Certification Remains Current If You are a Rescue Diver

The only scuba certification that expires after 24 hours is the First Aid certification. So, if you are a certified rescue diver, you must ensure your first aid certification remains current.

Fort PADI, this course is called the Emergency First Response course. SSI calls it the React Right course. For NAUI, it is known as the First Aid Provider, and also has similar names in the other agencies. The reasoning behind this is that first aid skills can diminish over time due to infrequent use, except in emergency situations.

When to Take a Scuba Refresher Course?

If you haven’t been diving for an extended period, such as 12 months or longer, it is recommended to take a scuba refresher course. In certain situations, it is also recommended for new scuba divers who haven’t dived in the past six months.

When you book a dive, the shop will inquire about your dive history and the date of your last dive. They may also request to see your logbook. Based on this information, a shop may require you to complete a refresher course for safety reasons.

Typically, this is considered a short course that lasts for a few hours, concentrating on dive theory and skills. Even if a refresher course isn’t mandatory, you can always opt for one if you are feeling apprehensive about resuming diving.

What Should You Do if You’ve Lost Your Scuba Certification Card?

In case of losing your certification card, you don’t need to worry. All you should do is contact the scuba agency that you are certified with. They will issue you a replacement (digital) card, which typically requires a processing fee.

What Should You Do if You’ve Forgotten Your Scuba Certification Card?

If a scuba diver forgot his certification card, Dive shops often have the capability to locate his certifications if they are affiliated with the same agency as him. For instance, if you hold a PADI Open Water certification and are diving with a PADI dive shop, they can access your information in their system.

They’ll only need to have internet and a computer. In very remote diving locations or on liveaboard trips, this may not always be possible.
