How Long Does It Take to Get PADI Certified?

Actually, you can become a certified scuba diver and get a scuba diving license in as little as four days. You can complete the knowledge development part of the scuba certification course by using PADI eLearning®, then it will take from you 3 days to complete the inwater training part of the course.

There are three parts to earn a scuba certification:

• The knowledge development part (whether classroom or online learning).
• The skill development part in confined water (a pool or pool-like environment).
• 4 open water dives in a large body of water.

With PADI eLearning®, you can complete the knowledge development part of the course at your own pace. You have a limit of one year to complete the online course. Instead of that, You can study the Open Water Diver manual, watch training videos, and join classroom lessons.

The skill development part can be completed in one very long day, but it’s usually spread over two to three half days in the pool. You must complete the open water dives over at least two days, and The time needed depends on how far the open water site is.

Here’s an estimate of how long each part of a scuba certification course usually takes:

• Knowledge development: From 5 to 10 hours.
• Pool training: From 6 to 10 hours.
• Open water dives: It must be done over a minimum of two days.

Why Such a Wide Range of Time?

PADI training is based on skill performance. Mastering a skill or concept quickly means you will move on to the next one. Forgetting a step, or feeling uncomfortable with a skill means you will need to repeat the skill until you and your instructor agree that you have mastered it and can move on.

The time needed depends on whether it’s a private or group class. Group classes are often cheaper and enjoyable, but having more students can extend the class time.

The PADI Open Water Diver Referral

An Open Water Diver Referral is your best option when you want to maximize your time on holiday by exploring, gaining scuba experience, and local food and drinks. With an open water referral, you can complete both the knowledge development segments and confined water dives before leaving home.

You can choose both the place and the time in which you can complete your four open water dives required for the certification. You will receive a referral document from your local instructor that verifies what you’ve accomplished. With this document, you can finish the course with any PADI Dive Shop or Instructor around the world within 12 months.

It’s worth noting that your final dives don’t have to be in a tropical location. You could get a scuba diving license (aka certification) while visiting Canada, Scotland, Iceland, or many other cold water diving destinations.
