Tiny Divers, Big Adventures: The Benefits and Risks of Scuba Diving for Kids

Scuba diving opens up a whole new underwater world for kids, combining adventure, education, and fun. It’s a fantastic way for children to learn about marine life, develop confidence, and build strong swimming skills. However, it’s essential to ensure they have the right training, equipment, and supervision to dive safely.

In this article, we will discuss together the benefits and risks of scuba diving for children.

Is Scuba Diving for Kids?

Maybe you’re a diving enthusiast hoping your kids will follow in your footsteps. Or perhaps your child is constantly begging, “Dad, I want to dive! I really, really want to dive!”

However, after over 30 years of diving, I’ve learned that while this sport is incredible, there are some who shouldn’t participate. Fortunately, they’re a rare exception.

Surprisingly, some people just don’t enjoy being in the water. Others may lack the physical ability to pass the hyperbaric medicine test, or feel overwhelmed by the theoretical aspects of learning to dive.

The same applies to young divers. Over 95% of children aged eight and above are fit for junior diving, both physically and mentally, but some don’t meet the criteria.

Kids Scuba Diving Requirements

If you’re curious about whether your child is ready to scuba dive, consider answering the questions provided in PADI’s book “Children and Scuba Diving: A Resource Guide for Instructors and Parents”

  • Is this something the child wants to do?
  • Can the kid swim?
  • Does the kid feel comfortable in water?
  • Can the child focus well enough to learn from class discussions, the briefings and debriefings in the pool and open water, in addition to other interactions with an instructor?
  • Is the child able to learn, remember, and apply various safety rules and principles?
  • Can the child read well enough to understand adult-level material, with extra reading time and possible adult assistance?
  • Is the child comfortable expressing any discomfort or confusion to an unfamiliar adult, such as an instructor or divemaster?
  • Does the child have sufficient self-control to respond to problems by following rules and seeking help instead of acting impulsively?
  • Does the child have enough self-discipline to stay with an adult buddy and adhere to safety rules, even after becoming comfortable with diving?
  • Can the child grasp and discuss hypothetical scenarios and basic abstract concepts like space and time?
