At first, you shouldn’t overthink about how to clear your scuba mask skill, as clearing it requires just breathing into your mouth and out of your nose, but once you start to overthink it, you become worried and this can lead to loss of confidence. When you lose confidence, you begin to have a tendency to shake, leading sometimes to do the opposite of what you want to do. In our case, you will find some new scuba diving students breathing into their nose instead of their mouth, if you do that you will get water in your throat and start to panic.

So, we can say that confidence is the key to complete the mask clearing skill while scuba diving. During the PADI Open Water Diver course, you will practice how to clear your scuba mask several times until you master it before you get your scuba certification. During the PADI Open Water Diver course, you will practice diving skills including the mask skills in confined shallow water at first. This will be easy for you, as you can stand up if anything goes wrong and you will feel relaxed when you know that you can stand up if you want. In confined water, you will practice the next skills in order:

  • Partially flooded mask.
  • Fully flooded mask. 
  • Mask removal and replacement 
  • Mask removal and replacement breathing for 1 minute.
  • No mask swim .

After that, you will go into the open water dives and repeat the previous skills. You need to complete all these mask skills in a comfortable and repeatable manner to make sure to complete the course and have your PADI certification.

9 Tips to Clear Your Scuba Mask When Scuba Diving

Following the next steps will make you master this skill rapidly:

  1. Stay calm and just think that it feels like putting your face under the shower.
  2. Believe that it’s an easy skill and you will just need to breathe into your mouth and out of your nose.
  3. Put water in your scuba mask from the bottom not from the top.
  4. Ensure to put water under your eye level.
  5. Never look down, like many scuba instructors teach, you just need to look forward.
  6. It is important to tilt your head slightly up.
  7. The most important step is to take a relaxed and slow breath into your mouth.
  8. Exhale through your nose while looking up.
  9. If there is some water remaining in your scuba mask, relax and repeat breathing out of the nose until you get a clear mask.

Improving Your Mask Clearing Skills

You should think about having your own scuba diving equipment, as when you have your own mask, this can improve your mask clearing skills. It will fit you much better than almost all rental masks. 

You needn’t to be worried, as traveling with a scuba mask is very easy and much more hygienic. You will find that latex seals much better on your face.
