Top Dive Travel Essentials for Technical Divers.
It’s holiday time—your week of XR diving or spot on the tech boat is ready to go. With the airlines these days clamping down on weight allowance, here are our recommendations from top 10 dive travel essentials for XR divers:.
- Decompression planning software.
- Marker tape and permanent marker.
- Nail polish remover or a Magic Sponge.
- Basic tools.
- Batteries.
- Oxygen sensors.
- A calculator.
- A memory stick or hard drive.
- A Kindle or a few books.
- An open mind and relaxed temperament.

1. Decompression Planning Software.
Your ability to plan your decompression dive is essential for your diving day. You can find many varieties of decompression planning software that are available on the market for iPads smartphones, desktop computers, and Androids.
Some software programs can be downloaded for free, but may have limited features. Other programs are available for a small fee, for example:
- V-Planner.
- DecoPlanner.
- MultiDeco.
- Baltic Planner.
- MV Planner.
- I-deco.
As an advice from DRAR experts, you should leave the heavier laptop at home and try a tablet or smartphone-based software. Ensure to practice on your new software before packing up your essentials for XR divers. This will guarantee having a basic understanding of the program before you need it!
2. Marker Tape and Permanent Marker.
No one wants to be stuck on a boat with someone unprepared and constantly borrowing gear! So, it goes without saying that you should try not to be that person.
After analysing your gas, which should be before every dive, it is an essential thing to mark and label your cylinders with their contents and the maximum depth of the gas.
Marker tape, like duct tape, is a great choice and comes in bright colors that are easy to see underwater. Ensure to purchase a new roll of tape with you and keep it locked away because it is one of the first things to go missing!
Thick permanent marker pens are vital for clear labeling. It’s nice to leave the tape with your dive guides at the end of the week. In many remote destinations, this type of tape may be hard to come by.

3. Nail Polish Remover or a Magic Sponge.
A good old-fashioned nail polish remover is the best option if you are looking for a product to clean the pencil off your slate or from your wetnotes. A small bottle can last all week. Instead of that, bring a Magic Sponge.
Although white sponges were mainly developed as tools for house cleaning, they are also considered the best choice for cleaning both dive slates and wetnotes.
You can store this Magic Sponge in a sealed plastic sandwich bag in order to keep it in better condition for a longer period. Another option is to cut it into several smaller pieces.
When carrying the sponges into harsh environments (such as on dive boats or jungle treks), they are likely to get salty or dirty. Cutting a large sponge into smaller pieces makes it last longer for dive travel.
4. Basic Tools.
Be prepared for any issue in your equipment by having a few specific tools in your essentials for XR divers. We recommend the following:
- Small adjustable spanners.
- Set of Allan keys.
- Small screwdriver.
- A handful of cable ties of various sizes.
- A cutting device of some kind.
5. Batteries.
It does not matter the number of times of checking the battery life in your dive computers, cameras, or rebreather electronics. A battery always dies at the worst time.
Have extras ready, since charging might not be easy. Some places don’t sell rebreather batteries easily. Stay sharp and pack a few extras in your essentials for XR divers.

6. Oxygen Sensors.
All rebreather divers should know that oxygen sensors are not that easy to come by once you leave home, especially when they travel abroad! It doesn’t matter purchasing new sensors for your trip, you will need to take a spare one or two just in case.
The worst case scenario that can happen is you may not need to use them, but your technical guide may be happy to buy them from you. It’s a great way to carry less on the way back.
7. A Calculator.
Most smart phones feature a calculator facility which is considered a very useful tool to have around. When analyzing your gas before scuba diving, you’ll need to calculate the gas’s max depth.
Or maybe you need to calculate your breathing rate or gas volumes. In all instances, a calculator will be beneficial. In any SSI XR course, your dive instructor will hit you with nonstop calculations. Be armed and ready!
8. A Memory Stick or Hard Drive.
During your trip, other divers can record footage of your diving experiences and vice versa. Ensure to easily swap the memories of your dives by adding a memory stick to your essentials for XR divers.
Your guide or other XR divers might share useful tips or info you’d like. Supply a memory stick and keep the information you want. And remember, you might want to swap tips with your dive buddies over a beer.

9. A Kindle or a Few Books.
After a longer decompression dive, a good book or even looking at the back of your eyelids in the sun are considered the best things to deal with off-gassing. Ensure to come armed with the needed tools in order to relax between your dives.
10. An Open Mind and Relaxed Temperament.
Stay open, relax, and enjoy the XR dive! Hearing your buddies’ top dive spots will have you planning your next trip. Search for the best countries, regions, and specialist dives that are a perfect fit for you!
