How to shark diving safely

The Dos

Research the Area

Before scuba diving with sharks in a dive site, you should do your research first and find out what types of sharks are there, their behavior in addition to the best practices for interacting with them. This will help you understand what to expect and the way to approach the encounter.

Stay Calm

If you meet a shark while diving, the first thing to focus on is to stay calm. Sharks are very sensitive to any movement or sound. So, if you make any sudden movement or any noise, this can start them.

If you remain calm and still, this won’t only prevent startling the shark, but also will help you to conserve air and also to control the situation.

Use Slow Movements

When you move around the shark, do that as slowly and smoothly as possible. Avoid making sudden movements or jerky motions, as this will startle the shark and make it become defensive. Always remember that slow and smooth movements help keep the shark relaxed and calm.

Keep a Safe Distance

It’s important to keep a safe distance from a shark, as it is a wild animal and can be unpredictable. As a golden rule, stay at least 6 ft away from any shark. This will keep you safe and also allows the shark to swim freely and behave naturally without threatening feelings.

Respect Their Space

Keep in consideration that sharks are apex predators and play an essential role in the ecosystem of the ocean. So, it’s important to respect their space and avoid interfering with their natural behavior. Don’t forget to avoid touching, chasing or riding sharks as this can stress them out and disrupt their behavior.

The Don’ts

Don’t Swim Away or Panic

To shark diving safely, ensure to remain calm and avoid swimming very quickly in case of encountering a shark while scuba diving. When you swim away quickly, this can trigger the predatory instincts of the shark, then he will start to follow you. Instead of this, remain still as possible and try to swim slowly backwards to keep a safe distance from it.

Don’t Touch or Feed Sharks

Don’t touch or feed sharks, as this isn’t only considered dangerous, but also it’s illegal in many places. When you feed a shark, this can alter its behavior and make it associate humans with food. Unfortunately, this can lead to many dangerous situations in the future.

Don’t Wear Shiny Jewelry

Shiny objects attract sharks, so ensure not to wear shiny jewelry or accessories while scuba diving with sharks, as they can attract the shark’s attention.

Don’t Approach Closely to Them

While it’s a fascinating experience to watch a shark, make sure you are keeping a safe distance from it. Sharks feel threatened when you get too close to them, and then may become defensive, leading to dangerous situations for both the scuba divers and the shark.
