What is a Scuba Regulator?
The scuba regulator is regarded as the lifeline between you and the air source while scuba diving. It is the most important piece in your diving kit, as it connects you with the gas cylinder to be able to breathe air from the tank.
Both the scuba regulator and the tank together form the self-contained underwater breathing apparatus which is called SCUBA which enables scuba divers to breathe easily underwater.
It is important to know how a scuba regulator works to ensure your safety and that you are using your scuba diving equipment properly.

How a Scuba Regulator WorksÂ
Basically, scuba diving is about staying underwater at greater depths for a long time. For this reason, you will need a huge quantity of breathable air. Storing the ait in its basic form won’t allow you to stay longer underwater.
So, the only way to stay longer is to pressurize and compress aur inside cylinder tanks. The job of a scuba regulator works on reducing the pressure of that compressed air to a more safer level every time a scuba diver inhales through their mouthpiece.
The Parts of Scuba Diving RegulatorÂ
The scuba regulator do its critical job of allowing you to breathe air from the cylinder at a safe pressure level by working in two stages:
The First Stage Regulator
As we previously have mentioned, the scuba tanks contain air that has been compressed and stored under high pressure (about 3000 psi).Â
To reduce this pressure, there is a piece called the regulator first stage which is attached to the valve of the tank. This piece works on reducing the pressure of the tank to an intermediate pressure (140psi), then releases the air into a hose that is connected to the second stage of the regulator.
The valve of the first stage no longer opens letting some air enter the hose then closes. The type of the tank’s valve also plays an essential role in this process.
As the scuba diver changes his depth, the ambient pressure of the surrounding water changes and the scuba regulator works also on compensating for this decreased pressure.

The Second Stage Regulator
The second stage is the part of the scuba regulator which you put into your mouth. Like the first stage regulator, the second stage regulator contains a mechanism that works on reducing the intermediate pressure of air in the hose which comes from the first stage tho the water pressure.
The second stage also has a piston or diaphragm construction that can start and stom the airflow.Â
The second stage regulator consists of:
- The mouthpiece.
- The exhaust valve.
- An emergency purge valve.
The exhaust valve is a one-way valve. Its job is letting air escape into the water when exhaling while not allowing water to enter from the outside.
If the water enters your mouthpiece, all you need to do is push the purge button (which is usually located in the front cover of the second stage.
With this mechanism, scuba divers can vomit without the need to pull out your second stage risking unintentional water inhalation.
