Random Acts of Kindness Day, celebrated every year on February 17, is the perfect chance to spread good vibes—scuba-diving style. Imagine wearing a wetsuit and share kindness underwater with other divers, ocean, and marine life, breathing through a regulator, and surrounded by the ocean we all love.
Kindness, along with diversity and inclusion, sits at the heart of the PADI Blueprint for Ocean Action, inspiring divers to protect the seas through responsible exploration and conservation.
It doesn’t take much to make a difference, and even the smallest gestures can strengthen the dive community, enhance well-being, and make every dive more rewarding. Here are a few simple random acts of kindness for diver to take part in.
Random Acts of Kindness for Divers to Other Divers
Random acts of kindness for divers to other divers can make every dive safer, smoother, and more enjoyable for everyone.
- Find something nice to say. For instance, compliment other divers for their gear, air consumption, or their ability to spot camouflaged sea creatures. Don’t hesitate to give praise.
- Help everyonein your group feel included and part of the discussion. This includes every one in the diving operations (the staff, crew, etc…). Know their names and smile at strangers.
- Talk to the solo diver. Unfortunately, not all divers have a dive buddy, and solo divers can feel lonely in the surface intervals. It’s easier for a couple or group to approach a solo traveler than it is for them.
- Encourage new scuba divers. Support beginner divers to help them feel more comfortable, confident, and less self-conscious.
- Be courteous. If you’re going to dive from a boat, let the other diver use the ladder first. Keep your scuba gear organized, throw away any trash and If you notice dive weights or gear out of place, return them to their proper  (Note: Don’t clean the gear of other divers without asking them first, because each one has their preferred way of doing it.)
- Have a friendwho needs a break from work/life stress? Invite them to learn scuba diving. Among random acts of kindness for divers, this is the most personal. When you refer a friend, they receive 20% off on the Open Water Diver eLearning, and you get 20% off on the continuing education eLearning courses.
- Tip your dive guide. Whether you believe in tipping or not, the day of Random Acts of Kindness for divers is considered a good day to tip your dive guide.
- Leave a review. Reviews are very important, but unfortunately many scuba divers don’t always have the time or energy to write one. Writing a review for your preferred dive shop is considered one of the best things you can do on the Day of the Random Acts of Kindness for Divers.
- Communicateto a dive buddy you haven’t connected to in a while. Whether he was an old friend or was your dive buddy during a dive trip abroad, it’s a good idea to message him to share happy memories.
- Send a message to your instructor to thank him. Perhaps you didn’t realize then, but when you remember that now, you realized how great your instructor was and appreciate that. Send them a message in which you thank them for their guidance and support.
Random Acts of Kindness for Divers to the Ocean
Small kind actions by divers can make a big difference, for each other and and also for the ocean we love.
- Do a beach and/or an underwater clean-up.Regardless of the size of your action-big or small- every effort helps keep our coasts free of debris.
- Use a sunscreen that is safe for reefs.Using natural or reef-safe sunscreens help you protect your skin without damaging corals.
- Become a PADI Torchbearer. Becoming a PADI Torchbearer means making a commitment to ocean conservation to protect oceans from plastics, free entangled animals in addition to safeguarding endangered species.
Random Acts of Kindness for Divers to Sea Life
Small, kind actions underwater help keep sea life safe and healthy. These actions include:
- Help save sharks and rays. You can help in saving them from extinction by collecting important census data, taking PADI Specialty courses and scuba diving with responsible dive operators.
- Learn the do’s and don’ts of suitable marine interaction. Are the encounters of your marine life respectful and sustainable? For divers, Random Acts of Kindness Day is considered a reminder to check that you’re not harming marine life without realizing it.
Spread Kindness
Spreading kindness in diving starts with simple, thoughtful actions. Encourage new divers by sharing helpful tips, respecting the ocean, and looking out for your dive buddies. These small actions create a positive dive culture, strengthen the community, and help protect the underwater world more than you can realize.
Have a wonderful day!
