Breathe Easily: Essential Techniques for Clearing Your Regulator Underwater

After regulatory recovery, your next step will be clearing your regulator underwater. Once you recover the regulator and put it into your mouth, it’s very important to clear the regulator to expel the water from it.

This skill is to make sure that you will not inhale the water into your lungs. There are two techniques to do that. The first one is the blast clear method and the other is the purge clear method. This article explains clearing your regulator underwater using both two methods. So go along with us.

What scuba regulators do

Scuba regulators are considered a great invitation. The regulator’s job is to deliver the air from the scuba tank to the scuba diver in a way that needed to breathe.

A scuba regulator is the hub of the scuba diving equipment. It’s important lies in linking many pieces of gear – the scuba tank to the BCD, alternate air source, submersible pressure gauge (SPG) and you.

Clearing Your Regulator Underwater

Clearing your regulator underwater is one of the essential Skills for scuba divers to Master.

When scuba diving, it is a common thing for water to enter your regulator.

This can disrupt your breathing and lead to a dangerous situation if you don’t address it promptly. There are two different methods for clearing your regulator underwater, including:

  • Blast clear method.
  • Purge clear method.

Blast Clear Method

Once recovering your regulator as we mentioned before, place it in your mouth gently, then blow a puff of air into it. This will clear the water through the exhaust valves of the regulator.

The process of regulatory recovery takes a few seconds, so you will have enough air to blow into it for clearing. You can slowly inhale to make sure that there is no water remaining and be able to breathe normally after that.

Purge Clear Method

You can use this technique when you haven’t got any air in your lungs to use it to blow into your regulator. After recovering the regulator, gently place it and your mouth.

You will find a button in the front of the mouthpiece of your regulator called the Purge button. Roll your tongue back, then push it against your mouthpiece in order to create a barrier and press this button.

The Purge button will blast the air into the regulator through the exhaust valves and clear it. After that, try to inhale slowly to make sure that there is no water remaining in your regulator, after which you can breathe normally.
