Steel vs. Aluminum Tanks: the Physical Differences
Aluminum is considered softer than steel. Aluminum tanks must come with thicker walls than steel tanks to be able to hold air at a comparable pressure. Aluminum is softer than steel, so its ability to scratch and dents is high.
Moisture can cause steel tanks to rust. They’re more prone to moisture damage than aluminum tanks and may need tumbling to clear internal oxidation.

Difference Between Low Pressure and High Pressure Tanks
Scuba tanks have a maximum pressure rating in PSI (pressure per square inch). Higher pressure means more compressed air and thicker tank walls for safety. A 3300 psi tank holds more air than a same-size tank at 2400 psi.

Dry Weight of Steel and Aluminum Tanks
Dry weight is the tank’s land weight— and is crucial for scuba divers trekking with gear. A steel tank is lighter than an aluminum tank when holding the same volume of air, as the tank walls are thinner. The tanks weigh between 25 and 36 pounds, while specialty tanks weigh 40 pounds or more.

Size of Steel vs. Aluminum Tanks
Steel tanks come with thinner walls than aluminum tanks ones with an equal pressure rating. An 80-cubic-foot steel tank held to 3000 psi will be slightly smaller in size than an 80-cubic-foot aluminum tank holding to 3000 psi because of the thinner walls of the tank.
Steel tanks store highly compressed air. HP tanks are smaller than standard ones because compressed air takes up less space.
The size of the tank is an important factor for young or small divers because it can hit their heads or legs underwater. Most standard tanks have a diameter of 7.25 inches, but can range around (20-40) inches long or more.
Steel vs. Aluminum Tanks (The Capacity)
The capacity of the tank refers to the gas volume (in cubic feet) that the tank can hold at its rated pressure. Bigger tanks hold more air, so it lasts longer underwater.
Tank capacity is an important factor for scuba divers who plan for deep or long dives, or divers having a high air consumption and may have advantages from the additional air of a high-capacity tank.
On the other hand, smaller scuba divers having low air consumption or divers who only do shallow or short dives may find Al 80 tanks too much and prefer lighter, low-capacity ones.

Steel vs. Aluminum Tanks: Buoyancy Characteristics
In general, steel tanks are more negatively buoyant than aluminum ones. Breathing from the tank makes it lighter.
The main difference between steel and aluminum tanks is that aluminum tanks can float (positively buoyant) because they are emptied while steel tanks don’t sink so much (less negatively buoyant) as they are emptied.
Whether a diver chose to dive with a steel or an aluminum tank, he must compensate for the increased buoyancy of the tanks before ending a dive. However, steel tanks sink more, so divers using them need less extra weight than with aluminum ones, because steel tanks are more negatively buoyant.
Durability of Steel vs Aluminum Tanks
When you care for your tanks properly, steel tanks generally last longer than aluminum tanks. Steel is harder than aluminum and is less likely to pit or dent, compromising the integrity of the tank and rendering it unusable.
Unlike aluminum, steel may rust, but when proper care (Use trusted stations with dry air and avoid emptying the tank fully) most rust can be avoided. Rust found during inspection can be removed by tumbling.
It is not uncommon to find cracks or fractures in the neck threads of aluminum tanks where the valve screws into the tank. These cracks can lead to a catastrophic gas loss, and a tank with a cracked thread is unusable. Visual inspections catch aluminum neck thread cracks before they become risky.
